Brampton Steelheads News Release
The Steelheads final game of the regular season started with a wonderful ceremony for our over-age players: Sam Babintsev, Brandon Devlin and Jacob Brennan. Babintsev was unfortunately held out due to injury, but Devlin and Brennan looked to go out with a bang.
The Line of Everett Clark, Cody Thompson and Bobby MacIntyre came out firing, giving the Fish their best chance early in the contest. MacIntyre dropped for Thompson in the slot, but the puck went wide. The Trout were forced to the penalty kill, as Dickerson took a double minor. Mississauga had a great kill, limiting the Petes chances through the four minutes. Greg Betzold had a chance on a bouncing rebound, but Brennan was sharp in steering the puck clear. Mikey McLeod also came out with tons of energy in this one, and made a spectacular defensive effort to break up a two-on-one. Betzold and MacIntyre were tied up together on the ice late in the period. Inexplicably there was no call made on the play. Sean Day had a good chance in the final minute as he jumped up into the rush to get a shot of in the slot.
Mississauga had good pressure to start the second, but another penalty kill would delay some momentum. As the penalty expired, Josh MacDonald had a short side attempt, but Brennan shut the door. Josh Maguire opened the scoring, giving the Petes a one-goal lead with a short-handed marker. Damian Bourne finally shook the monkey off his back, scoring his first of the season to answer. McLeod followed up with a goal of his own, sneaking one under the blocker of Dylan Wells, etching a lead for the Steelheads. Clark kept the good times going, scoring Mississauga's third goal in just over a minute. The Petes took a timeout and collected themselves, which paid dividends in the form of a Steve Lorentz goal shortly after. A busy second period to follow a scoreless first, and the Steelheads took a 3-2 lead into the third.
Steelheads had to kill a penalty early in the third, but created some offensive chances after the successful kill. Mississauga got a power play opportunity of their own, nearing the midway point of the final frame in the regular season. On the chance, McLeod tipped down a Jared Walsh point shot and jumped on the rebound for his second goal of the game. In their final OHL games, Brandon Devlin had two assists and Jake Brennan made 39 saves in the win. The Steelheads finished the 2014-15 season on a high note, beating the Petes by a score of 4-2.
