Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Idaho's special teams delivered three power play goals and a shorthanded tally to spark the Steelheads to a 5-2 win over the Fresno Falcons at the Bank of America Centre Thursday night. Idaho improves to 3-2-0 against Fresno this season, and extends its winning streak to five-games. The crowd of 4,317 saw the Steelheads gain a three-point cushion over the Falcons for the final playoff spot in the West Division.
Idaho's goalie Frank Doyle improved his record to 29-12-3 and leads the league in wins. Doyle stopped 20-of-22 shots, while Fresno's Brett Jaeger stopped 34-of-39 with his record falling to 17-8-6.
Andrei Vasilyev, in his first appearance at the Bank of America Centre since last season's Kelly Cup Championship game, scored on the rebound from another newcomer Mike Stutzel (assigned to Idaho from its AHL affiliate Utah Grizzlies 3/15). The power play tally came at 4:30 of the first period. With Idaho again on the power play, Lance Galbraith gave his team a 2-0 lead at 15:15 with a wrister from the bottom of the near circle that beat Brett Jaeger. The Falcons narrowed the margin at 16:59 when David Brisson (who played one game with Idaho to start the season) tallied the first even-strength goal of the game.
In the second, Idaho applied pressure on the power play with a flurry in front of Fresno's net. After a number of saves, Jaeger finally let one in and Vasilyev tallied his second of the game at 4:43. Fresno closed the gap again to one-goal at 11:21 after defenseman Corey Hessler took a shot from inside the blue line and Shawn Sutter deflected the puck past Doyle. After two, Idaho had a 3-2 lead and had outshot Fresno 29-17.
The Steelheads added two goals in the third period, with the first coming from Scott Burt who scored a shorthanded goal at 3:52, his 22nd of the season. On the power play, Galbraith fed Darrell Hay and Hay's shot was redirected in by Frank Lukes at 13:32.
The two teams face off for Game 2 of the critical three-game series tomorrow night at 7:10 pm.
