
San Diego Tries To Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With Win Against Long Beach

SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls look to keep their playoff hopes alive and avenge last Friday's loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs when the two lock heads again tonight at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.
SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Ice Dogs have met six times this season with San Diego holding a 4-2-0 series edge. The two teams will clash one more time this season, tomorrow in Long Beach. San Diego and Long Beach met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 9-0-1 edge.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 40-12-2 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 22-4-1 all-time against the Ice Dogs at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena. San Diego is unbeaten in 27 of its last 29 head-to-head meetings against Long Beach (26-2-1), dating back to October 2002...
LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (MARCH 18 VS LBH): Joe Cardarelli netted a hat trick and added two assists, while Christian Larrivee also earned five points with two goals and three assists, leading the Ice Dogs to a convincing 8-1 victory over the Gulls. Long Beach jumped out to an early two-goal lead before San Diego got on the scoreboard late in the first period. But that was the lone Gulls highlight as the Ice Dogs dominated the rest of the way. It was only their second regulation win against the Gulls in the last three seasons.
GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (32-25-6) enter the day sixth in the West Division, 10 points behind the Idaho Steelheads for the fourth and final playoff spot... They are seven points back of the fifth-place Fresno Falcons... San Diego has one game in hand on both Idaho and Fresno... The Gulls' magic number to be eliminated from the postseason is nine (The combination of points gained by Idaho and points lost for the Gulls totaling nine)... The Falcons' magic number to eliminate San Diego is 12... The Gulls are 20-8-3 at home, but just 12-17-3 on the road this season... They have outscored their opponents 112-90 at home, but have been outscored 101-73 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 11-14-2 in their last 27 games... Since the all-star break, they are 6-4-1 at home and 5-9-1 on the road (11-13-2 overall)...
OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 23-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 9-22-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents six times since the all-star break (26 games)... They are just 16 for 125 on the power play (12.8 percent) since the all-star break... Newcomer Brett Draney is in the midst of a seven-game point streak, notching 14 points (6g, 8a) in that span â all with the Steelheads... San Diego is 1 for 23 on the power play against Long Beach this season (4.3 percent)...
LONG BEACH UPDATE: Long Beach (38-18-8) begins the day second in the West Division, four points behind the first-place Alaska Aces and one point ahead of the third-place Bakersfield Condors... The Ice Dogs, however, have one game in hand on both Alaska and Bakersfield... Long Beach has won three straight after winning only once in its previous eight games (1-4-3)... In their last 45 games, the Ice Dogs are 29-10-6... Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 10 (The combination of points gained by Long Beach and points lost by Fresno totaling 10)... Nathan Martz (+33) and Marco Rosa (+29) rank one and two respectively in the ECHL in plus-minus... Long Beach is 7 for 17 on the power play against the Gulls this season (41.2 percent)...
TRANSACTIONS: Wes Rypien was placed on the seven-day injured list yesterday with a groin injury. He joins Curtis Brown (groin) and Nick Ganga (knee), also out with injuries... Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard was released yesterday... Aaron Forsythe and future considerations (two players to be named later) were acquired Tuesday from the Peoria Rivermen in exchange for Ian Forbes... Draney was acquired Tuesday from Idaho in exchange for Evgueni Nourislamov... Simon Lajeunesse was acquired Tuesday from the Dayton Bombers... Sylvain Deschatelets was traded Tuesday to Bakersfield in exchange for future considerations... David Karpa was activated from the injured list Sunday...
