Idaho Steelheads News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Idaho Steelheads disappointed the fourth-largest crowd of the season at Sullivan Arena, beating the host Alaska Aces 4-1 Saturday night. Colin Zulianello carried a shutout until the final two-and-a -half minutes, just missing his second shutout of the season. His strong play in net (31 saves on 32 shots) gave the Steelheads a split of the first two games in the three-game weekend series.
"There were a lot of great efforts tonight, first and foremost Colin Zulianello. This was an evenly played game. At the end of the night, Zulianello was the key to the game. He was outstanding," Steelheads Head Coach John Olver said.
Idaho got on the scoreboard first, when defenseman David Cornacchia passed to Warren Peters behind the Alaska net, who fed it in front and Brett Draney poked it by Alaska goalie Peter Aubry at 8:46 of the first period.
Early in the third period, Alaska's Chris Minard turned the puck over, leading to an Idaho 2-on-0 breakaway. Warren Peters led the charge and after Aubry stopped his backhander, Frank Lukes stuffed the rebound into the open net to give Idaho a 2-0 lead at the 4:03 mark.
Late in the game, with the teams skating 4-on-4, Zulianello stopped B.J. Young's initial shot, but the Alaska foward picked up the puck and wrapped it around past Zulianello to draw the Aces to within one goal at 17:26.
The Steelheads iced the game just :31 later, when Idaho raced down the rink with an odd-man rush. Bobby Russell took three shots at the Alaska net. The first two were stopped by Aubry, but Russell's persistence paid off and he put his second rebound past Aubry to give Idaho a 3-1 lead. Billy Tibbetts and Darrell Hay assisted on the tally. Tibbetts scored his first goal in an Idaho uniform, when he put in an empty-net goal at 19:28 for his second point of the night.
Tomorrow night's rubber match can be heard live beginning at 7:00 p.m. MST on ESPN Radio 1350 KTIK with Britt Talbert calling the action. In addition, a live webcast link is available through www.idahosteelheads.com.
