Gulls Fall In Toledo, 5-2
January 30, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio â Maris Ziedins notched a goal and two assists, leading the red-hot Toledo Storm to a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Gulls Sunday afternoon, before 3,218 at the Toledo Sports Arena. It was the first-ever match-up between the two teams.
Toledo's Scooter Smith and P.J. Martin each recorded a goal and an assist, while Sam Paolini chipped in with two assists. Goaltender Scott Fankhouser, who entered the game with the fourth-best goals-against average in the ECHL, made 21 saves en route to his 17th win of the season.
The Gulls (22-14-4) have now lost three of their last four overall and are 1-2-0 so far on their season-long seven-game road trip. The Storm (23-14-4) have now won four straight and are unbeaten in 11 of their last 13 games (10-2-1)...
Newcomer Cory Pecker gave San Diego a 1-0 lead 8:07 into the opening frame with his first goal in a Gulls uniform. Sylvain Deschatelets, the club-leader in assists, grabbed the puck behind the net and centered it in front to Pecker, who beat Fankhouser. Brian Gornick also earned an assist on the play.
Smith tied it at 13:53 of the first, converting on a rebound from Nick Parillo's initial shot from the left wing side. Parillo took a pass from Danny Eberly and fired one on net that Gulls netminder Eddy Ferhi steered away. The rebound, however, caromed over to Smith in the right circle and the Toledo winger punched it home.
The Storm then grabbed the lead just 32 seconds into the second period, as defenseman Jason Jozsa blistered in a slap shot from the blue line. Ziedins won an endzone faceoff back to Jozsa, whose ensuing slapper beat Ferhi high blocker-side.
Martin notched a power-play goal at 12:51 of the second, giving Toledo a 3-1 advantage. Smith skated out of the right wing corner and centered a pass to Tyler Knight, who fanned on his shot. The puck, however, rolled right to Martin, who fired it behind Ferhi.
San Diego's Chris Lynch cut the deficit back to one 1:24 later, knocking in a rebound off Jonathon Shockey's blue-line slap shot. Shockey grabbed a loose puck at the point and rifled one that Fankhouser stopped. Lynch was right there to coral the rebound, however, and lifted it over the fallen Storm netminder.
Toledo responded with their third goal of the middle period at 17:08, as Ziedins regained the Storm's two-goal cushion. The play was all set-up by team captain and leading scorer Paolini, who also assisted on Martin's power-play marker. After taking a pass from Doug Andress, Paolini whipped a nice feed across the crease to Ziedins, who redirected it into the net.
Todd Jackson converted on another rebound left by Ferhi at 3:44 of the third period, putting the game away. Ferhi made the original save on Martin's slapper from the point, but kicked the rebound right on the tape of Jackson and the Toledo rookie forward easily tapped it in. Ziedins earned an assist for his third point of the game.
Notes: The Gulls are now 3-4-0 against teams outside of their division. They have six games remaining this season against interdivision teams... San Diego is now 8-10-2 overall on the road... The Gulls entered the game with the fifth-best offense in the ECHL, averaging 3.18 goals per game. They, however, have only scored 47 goals in 20 road games this season (2.35 per game)... Evgueni Nourislamov was placed on the 30-day injured list after breaking his thumb during Friday morning's practice... Pecker was assigned by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Saturday... Trevor Koenig (elbow tendonitis), Sean Murphy (broken thumb) and Wes Rypien (sprained knee) all remain on the injured list... Andrew Canzanello remains with Cincinnati... Mathieu Chouinard, originally thought to have re-injured his groin Friday in Peoria, actually left the game due to dehydration. He remains on the active roster and is available to play...
