Steelheads Preview
February 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
The Steelheads had a very successful weekend overall, rebounding from a Friday night loss to the Barrie Colts with back-to-back wins on the road.
The Steelheads fell behind by as many as three goals to the Colts, but really outplayed their visitors in the third period. The Trout put up 20 of their 39 shots in the final frame, and potted four goals on netminder Mackenzie Blackwood while limiting Barrie to just eight shots.
Mississauga carried that momentum with them through the weekend, and were determined to pick up some points on this road trip.
On Saturday, Jimmy Lodge, Jesse Barwell and Greg DiTomaso all experienced something new to them, as they lined up against their former teams for the first time in each of their OHL careers.
Lodge scored in his return to Saginaw, Barwell notched an assist and DiTomaso was a minus-2 in the Steelheads 5-2 defeat of the Spirit. With the win, the Steelheads completed the season sweep of the Spirit, outscoring them 9-4 in two games.
The good times kept rolling as the Trout made their way to Sarnia to take on the Sting. The Trout opened up a big 4-0 lead over the Sting halfway through the game. Mississauga held on for the 6-3 victory and second in as many days.
This weekend also spelled a huge offensive output for the Steelheads. A team that has struggled with goal scoring this season put up 15 goals in their three games and have now scored a goal in seven straight periods.
The Steelheads have jumped from ninth place to seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. Kingston and Peterborough are right behind the Trout and have four and three games in hand respectively.
Sam Babintsev went on a torrid scoring streak, totaling eight points (4G, 4A) on the weekend, earning himself the OHL's Pioneer Energy Player of the Week honours. Babintsev was named Second star, First star and First star in each game last weekend respectively.
This week the Steelheads continue to the second half of their four-game road trip. They'll visit the Meridian Centre on Thursday to take on the streaking IceDogs, then Kitchener Memorial Arena to complete the season series with the Rangers before finally returning to the Hershey Centre for their Family Day Matinee hosting the Erie Otters.
After taking the first two decisions of the year, the Steelheads have fallen to the IceDogs in all three of their most recent meetings. The remaining games in this season series are all to be played in Niagara. The IceDogs are 7-2-1-0 in their last ten games and are coming off back-to-back victories over the London Knights. The Steelheads look to continue their offence and are 3-1 in their last four road games.
In the first meeting with the Kitchener Rangers, Jacob Brennan stole the show, making 47 saves to lead the Steelheads to a 2-1 home victory. Kitchener's goaltender, Jake Paterson, after being traded from Saginaw at the deadline went 6-2-1-0 in January with his new team and was selected as Goaltender of the Month. The Steelheads look to sweep the season series against the Rangers for the first time.
On Family Day, Mississauga will also conclude their season series against the Erie Otters. The Trout have dropped all three contests thus far, and look to avoid being swept. Due to the World Junior Championships, Connor McDavid was absent in the Otters first visit to the Hershey Centre. This will be his first game against the Steelheads since suffering a fractured hand on November 11, 2014.
