Saginaw Falls to Plymouth Wednesday Night

The Saginaw Spirit played host to the Plymouth Whalers for some Wednesday night hockey at the Dow Event Center. The Spirit fell to the Whalers 5-1, with Saginaw's only goal coming from Mitchell Stephens.

Saginaw and Plymouth turned in a scoreless first period, with the Spirit putting multiple scoring opportunities on the Whaler's starting goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic. The Spirit went through two successful penalty kills, holding off the Whalers offense. Although Saginaw fought hard to open the game's scoring they were unable to find the back of the net. However, Saginaw outshot Plymouth in the first period, recording 11 shots on the opposing goaltender in comparison to the Whalers 8 shots on net.

The Plymouth Whalers pulled ahead of the Saginaw Spirit in the second period, netting four goals on Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov. Plymouth's Connor Chatham, Connor Sills, Victor Crus Rydberg and Sonny Milano were the goal scorers for the opposing team in the second period. Saginaw's Mitchell Stephens was able to tally the Spirit's lone goal on the power play at the 15:21 mark with the help of Marcus Crawford and Jesse Barwell. Stephens' second period tally was his 18th goal of the season. Shots on goal for the second period read Plymouth 16, Saginaw 7.

Plymouth was able to net one more goal against Saginaw in the third period, securing their 5-1 win over the Spirit after the final buzzer sounded. At the 2:10 mark Will Bitten scored the Whalers fifth goal of the night, with assists being credited to Sonny Milano and Tyler Sensky. The final score at the Dow Event Center read Plymouth 5, Saginaw 1, with final shots favoring the Whalers 34-26.

The Saginaw Spirit are back at the Dow Event Center on Friday, February 13th as they take the ice against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The Spirit will finish up their longest home stretch of the season on Saturday night, as they play host to the Barrie Colts. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:11 p.m.
