Steelheads Lose Home Opener to Las Vegas, 4-3

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost 5-3 to the expansion Las Vegas Wranglers tonight before a sold out Bank of America Centre. The loss marks the Steelheads first defeat in a home opener since 1999. Overall, Idaho is now 4-3 in season debuts on home ice since the club's inception in 1997.

Former Steelheads Jonathan Shockey recorded the first goal of the game, and first-ever for the Wranglers, in the inaugural ECHL game at the Bank of America Centre. He blasted one on the power play from just inside the blue line past Idaho goaltender Dan Ellis at 7:36. Las Vegas' second goal came less than two-minutes later (9:21) when Greg Day scored a short-handed goal. The Steelheads answered at 11:04 as defenseman Darrell Hay shot from outside the circle and Jan Kopecky picked up the rebound. Chris Marinucci also assisted on the tally. Day scored his second of the night when he trickled one past Ellis at 16:12. Garrett Bembridge and Justin Kelly each recorded an assist. Idaho's Adam Copeland closed the gap with a power play goal as he beat Wranglers netminder Marc Magliarditi stick side at 16:39.

The Wranglers pulled ahead 4-2 at the six-minute mark of the second period when Dave Cousineau scored a power play goal. The lead increased to three goals when Vegas scored their fifth of the night. Bembridge scored and Day tallied his fourth point with the assist, at 8:37.

Idaho scored the third period's lone goal. Jan Kopecky brought the puck in from center ice and Marinucci capitalized with a rebound at 8:07.

The two teams resume their season-opening series with games Saturday and Sunday at the Bank of America Centre. Puck drops Saturday at 7:05 p.m., and Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
