Fresno Falcons News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons shutout the Bakersfield Condors, 3-0, on Friday night at Centennial Garden behind two goals from Kris Porter and a sparkling goaltending performance from Nolan Schaefer making his first professional start.

Porter opened the scoring 13:37 into the hockey game when he converted off a two-on-two with Greg Bullock. Defenseman Drew Schoneck gave the Falcons some breathing room just over a minute later on the power play by shoveling home a carom off the end boards.

The teams were scoreless in the second period and headed to the third with Fresno still leading, 2-0. Bakersfield finally started to mount an attack late in the frame still trailing by two. After a flurry in front of Schaefer, Brad Mehalko led the rush back the other way before finding Porter for his second of the game to seal the Falcons' opening night victory.

Schaefer, assigned to Fresno from the San Jose Sharks, stopped 23 shots in his first career start as he helped his club avenge a shutout at the hands of the Condors during each team's season opener a year ago.

The Falcons continue this 11-game road trip to open the 2003-04 season next Friday, Oct. 24, when they begin a three-game set in Anchorage against the Alaska Aces.
