Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Alaska Aces will attempt to stay at a competitive edge this weekend with a scrimmage at Tesoro Sports Centre tonight and another workout and skills competition in Eagle River tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
A quirk in the ECHL schedule means that the Aces are the only team among 31 in the league NOT opening their season at some point this weekend. Alaska welcomes Fresno to Sullivan Arena for the first of a three-game set next Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons, meanwhile, play at Bakersfield tonight. The Aces will split into Blue and White squads for this evening's scrimmage at Tesoro, scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
After tomorrow's practice at the McDonald Center in Eagle River, there will be a skills competition and autograph session with the players and head coach Davis Payne. Events included in the skills contest are fastest skater, hardest shot, relay race, rapid-fire shooting and breakaway relay. Fans interested in having Aces merchandise signed by team members are encouraged to bring those items to the autograph session. Otherwise, team members will be signing posters for fans who wish to have their favorite player's autograph. Admission to Saturday's event will be $5 or $3 along with a donation of a non-perishable food item. Donations, made by the McDonald Center, will benefit the Chugiak/Eagle River Food Pantry.
Total attendance for last weekend's pre-season battles with Trenton soared well over the 7,000 mark as the Aces captured a 3-2 shootout victory one night after a last-second 2-1 defeat. Alaska again finished among the top five clubs in the ECHL with 33 new season tickets sold last week and has sold a total of 1,290, nearly 500 more than a year ago. Single-game and group tickets are now on sale to the general public.
Alaska practices at Sullivan Arena Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., then returns to its home ice for the series against Fresno. The Aces will be giving away 2003-04 magnetic schedules to the first 5,000 fans arriving at Sullivan next Friday for the season opener, courtesy of ACS Wireless. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
