Boise, ID - Defenseman Patrick Coulombe netted a power play goal 62 seconds into overtime spoiling the defending Kelly Cup Champions season opener, as the Salmon Kings skated to a 2-1 win over the Steelheads in front of a sold out crowd of 5,208 fans at Qwest Arena on Friday night.

With Coulombe and forward Milan Gajic playing catch in the high slot, the Quebec native fired a one-timer that beat a screened John Daigneau (23 saves) and gave the Salmon Kings (1-0-0) the victory.

Early in the game the Salmon Kings wasted no time quieting the capacity crowd, as Wes Goldie took a Kevin Estrada pass from the side of the crease and slipped the puck past a stunned Daigneau just 37 seconds into the opening stanza.

With just over five minutes left in the first period, the Steelheads (0-0-1) took advantage of a favorable bounce to tie the score at one. Steelheads' defenseman Blake Forsyth took a monster hit from a Salmon Kings' player as he dumped the puck into the offensive zone and with Salmon Kings' goaltender Julien Ellis (35 saves) coming out to play the puck, the disc caromed away from him and onto the stick of Steelheads' rookie Mark Bomersback who swept the puck into an empty cage. Defenseman Kory Scoran grabbed the second assist.

There was no scoring in the second and third periods despite multiple power plays and good opportunities for both clubs. The Steelheads ended the evening one-for-10 on the man advantage and the visitors finished one-for-six.

The Steelheads complete their two-game set against the Salmon Kings on Saturday, October 20. Face-off from Qwest Arena is at 7:10 p.m. MST. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
