Brampton Steelheads News Release
Erie, PA - The Mississauga Steelheads travelled south of the border to face the Erie Otters on Saturday night, coming off a win Friday against the Niagara IceDogs.
Thomas Harley opened the scoring in the first period as he fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Daniel Murphy. Kai Edmonds was tested early, as Maxim Golod flew in on a breakaway but was immediately turned aside. The Steelheads had a great opportunity to increase their lead, as Adam Varga found William Portokalis on a 2-on-1, but the cross-crease pass bounced over Portokalis' stick. At the end of the first, Mississauga was outshooting Erie 12-5.
The Otters tied the game in the second period, as Hayden Fowler picked up a rebound and slid the puck just under the pads of Edmonds. Quickly regaining the lead, Harley skated the puck from end to end, stickhandling through Erie's defencemen, before dishing the puck off to Keean Washkurak who sniped one low on Murphy. With the clock winding down in the period, Chad Yetman scored to extend his goal streak to 6-games and tie the game at two heading into the third period.
With Prueter and Schwindt both seeing the penalty box, the Steelheads PK was put to work, but proved up to the task defending off both penalties to start the third period. Mississauga battled hard to break the tie for the remainder of the period, but were unable to put one past Murphy. The two teams headed to overtime, with Mississauga outshooting Erie 32-28 at the end of regulation.
With early penalty trouble, the Otters would have a great opportunity to start the overtime period. Jamie Drysdale came close to ending the game, as he rang a shot off the crossbar, but the Steelheads persevered to kill the penalty. Harley had a great opportunity, as he picked up the puck in the slot, but was kicked aside by Murphy. Overtime would solve nothing, as the teams headed to a shootout.
Richard Whittaker scored the only goal in the shootout, lifting one high glove on Murphy to secure the win for the Steelheads. Kai Edmonds was perfect in the shootout, stopping all three Otters shooters. Thomas Harley extended his point streak (5G, 10A) to 8 games in the contest, while Edmonds played one of his best games of the season stopping 29/31 shots (.935 SV%).
