Steelheads Down Rush in Shootout
March 22, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Charlie Dodero scored his team's only goal in regulation on Wednesday night and added the shootout winner to power the Idaho Steelheads (38-20-7) to a 2-1 shootout win over the Rapid City Rush (21-38-6) in front of 3,809 fans at CenturyLink Arena.
[cid:image003.jpg@01D3C16A.C322AC80]Tomas Sholl stopped 26 shots to earn his fourth consecutive win, remaining undefeated in regulation this season through 13 appearances with a record of 9-0-2.
Adam Vay made 48 stops for the Rush, but Dodero broke through with 4:42 remaining in the third period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Connor Chatham chased down Ian Brady behind the Rush net and stripped the puck away, sliding it out to the high slot. Dodero stepped into the loose puck and snapped a shot that squeezed under Vay's arm for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Idaho lead.
The Rush had ten shots in the first two periods combined, but they fired 16 shots in the third period and tied the game with 2:10 left in regulation. With the Rush on a 4-on-3 power play, Gustav Bouramman fired a one-timer from the left circle. Sholl made the save and stopped a follow-up rebound by Andrew Miller, but Alec Baer finished the second rebound for his first professional goal in his first professional [Charlie Dodero, 3/21; Brian Losness] game to tie the score 1-1.
The goal snapped Sholl's personal shutout streak at 210:14. Sholl has surrendered four goals in five games for Idaho, three of them while Idaho was shorthanded.
After Shane Hanna rang the crossbar in overtime, the teams went to a shootout. Baer scored in the bottom of the first round to put the Rush in front, and the Steelheads were down to their final attempt when Justin Parizek beat Vay in the top of the third round for his sixth shootout goal of the season to keep the game alive.
The Rush still had a chance to win with Peter Sivak in the bottom of the third, but he was turned away by Sholl's blocker. In the top of the fifth, Dodero snapped a shot over Vay's shoulder on his first shootout attempt of the season to put the Steelheads in front. Daniel Leavens' response for Rapid City rang the crossbar and stayed out, securing Idaho's seventh shootout win of the season and their ninth win in eleven meetings with Rapid City this year.
The Steelheads' last five games at CenturyLink Arena have all gone beyond regulation, with the Steelheads winning four of those games on the strength of two overtime goals and two shootout wins.
The victory for Idaho reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to 3 points. The Steelheads can clinch their 21st consecutive playoff berth on Friday with a win and a Tulsa Oilers regulation loss.
The Steelheads and Rush meet again on Friday night at CenturyLink Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:10pm MT. The game is available on 1350AM KTIK and seen on Cable One and ECHLTV.

COORS LIGHT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME Charlie Dodero: Goal, shootout winner, 3 shots, plus-1
PLAY OF THE GAME: Charlie Dodero's patience in his first shootout attempt of the season paid off for the shootout winner past Adam Vay in the fifth round. Dodero drifted slowly in on Vay, waiting until he reached the tops of the circles before flinching twice, faking Vay down to the ice, and snapping a wrist shot over the left shoulder to give the Steelheads the lead and ultimately the win.
