Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads hosted their Central Division rivals, the Niagara IceDogs for a Friday night tilt at the Hershey Centre. Coming off a big win against the conference leading Kingston Frontenacs last Sunday, the Steelheads looked to kick off the weekend on the right foot; and they did just that, blanking the IceDogs 5-0.
Both teams exchanged a number of scoring chances in the opening frame, before the Steelheads latest addition, Mason Marchment potted his 12th of the season late in the period to give Mississauga a 1-0 lead. Michael McLeod and Stephen Gibson drew the assists on Marchment's goal as the Steelheads held a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period was more heated than the first as both teams took their fair share of penalties, giving each side a number of power play opportunities. Down a man, Stefan LeBlanc banked a pass off the boards that sent Michael McLeod on a short handed breakaway, and he did not disappoint. McLeod's 18th of the season gave the Steelheads a 2-0 lead. Mississauga continued to dominate, adding another goal in the second from Captain, Josh Burnside. Damian Bourne and Sean Day picked up the assists on Burnside's ninth of the season.
With a 3-0 lead, the Steelheads didn't slow down as they added a pair of goals in the final frame. Everett Clark, who was celebrating his 20th birthday, netted his eighth of the season just 58 seconds into the frame to put the Steelheads up 4-0. Marchment added the final tally of the night, his second of the game, at 4:30 on the power play to solidify a 5-0 win for the Trout. Goaltender, Jack Flinn turned away all 29 shots to earn his league-best 7th shutout of the season.
The Steelheads travel to Hamilton tomorrow to take on the Bulldogs before returning home Sunday to host the Barrie Colts.
