Rangers Rebound with Win at the Bayshore

Kitchener Rangers News Release

After narrow losses to the London Knights and the Erie Otters over the course of the past week, the Kitchener Rangers weren't taking no for an answer when it came to picking up two valuable points against another Midwest Division rival.

Ryan MacInnis scored twice and Adam Mascherin tallied three assists as the Rangers (31-8-4-0) defeated the host Owen Sound Attack 5-2 in front of 3,195 fans at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on Saturday night.

The win prevented the Rangers from suffering three straight regulation losses for the first time this season, and saw them gain points on both the Erie Otters (4-1 loss to Niagara) and the idle London Knights.

MacInnis' two-goal performance now gives him 20 consecutive games with at least a point (13-2033), and leaves him just one game shy of tying the league's longest point streak this season (21 games) set by Mitch Marner of the Knights from October 17 - January 9. MacInnis has now registered three goals and five assists for eight points in four games versus the Attack (19-17-6-3) this season.

Another member of the Rangers who has enjoyed success against the Attack this season has been Mascherin, whose three assists tonight give him a running total of eight points (4-4) over the course of the five meetings between the two clubs.

Dawson Carty earned his ninth win of the season in goal for the Rangers, and remains undefeated in regulation (9-0-1-0). He was impressive - especially to set the tone in the first period with a number of high-quality saves - and would finish the night making 24 stops.

Michael McNiven suffered the loss for the Attack, falling to 13-12-6-3 on the season after allowing four goals on 34 shots.

Gustaf Franzen picked up a goal and an assist on the night, and said the team was happy with the way they rebounded following a pair of disappointing losses.

"It's never an easy game, coming into Owen Sound," said Franzen. "The surface here is a little smaller, so there's less room out there to make things happen, plus their fans always give them great support.

"But after we didn't come away with the wins we wanted against London and Erie, we were happy with the way we played out there tonight and happy we could pick up two big points."

MacInnis gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 3:15 of the first period after banking in his own rebound, assisted by Darby Llewellyn. The Attack would even things up 1-1 with just their first shot on goal of the night, with Petrus Palmu finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Kevin Hancock and Ethan Szypula picking up the assists at 5:22.

The stalemate was shortlived, however, as the Rangers would regain the lead just 67 seconds after the Attack goal. Mascherin collected the puck after an Owen Sound turnover and patiently waited before finding Connor Bunnaman who drove to the net and fed Mason Kohn for his 13th goal of the season at 6:29.

With the Attack and Rangers called for off-setting minors, Franzen would score 4-on-4 to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead, from Mascherin, at 15:44. The Rangers would head to the first intermission outshooting the Attack by a margin of 17-11.

The teams would exchange power play goals in the second, as Jeremy Bracco buried a pretty feed from Franzen to give the Rangers a three-goal lead, 4-1 at 7:41, with Mascherin picking up his third point of the night with the second assist.

Attack captain Santino Centorame cut the Rangers lead back down to two, from Hancock and Palmu at 14:09. The Rangers had control of the shot clock 26-17 through two periods of play.

The lone goal of the third period was an empty netter for MacInnis, as the Rangers captain restored the three-goal lead for his team, unassisted, at 18:19. The Rangers would outshoot the Attack 35-26 at the final horn.

Each team would tally a marker on the man advantage, as the Rangers would go 1-for-2, and the Attack would finish 1-for-3.

Franzen (3), Palmu (2) and Mascherin (1) were chosen as the Three Stars of the Game.

Gustaf Franzen, Frank Hora and Brandon Robinson each wore 'A's and skated as alternates to captain Ryan MacInnis.

The Rangers return to action tomorrow when they close out the weekend against the Flint Firebirds for a 2pm start at the Aud.
