Attack Fall to Rangers in Divisional Battle
January 23, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack were victimized by a Midwest Division foe when the Kitchener Rangers visited the Bayshore on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Petrus Palmu and Kevin Hancock both had multipoint nights, but it wasn't enough for the Attack who dropped a 5-2 contest to the Rangers.
Kitchener struck first on the night, finding the back of the net at 3:15 of the 1st period off of a turnover. Ryan MacInnis would score for the Rangers, taking a pass from Darby Llewellyn in the slot and beating Michael McNiven to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
The Attack wasted no time in responding though, with the line of Kevin Hancock, Petrus Palmu, and Ethan Szypula continuing their excellent play as of late.
Just over two minutes after the Rangers grabbed the lead, Hancock found Szypula with a stretch pass and the 3rd year forward outwaited the entire Kitchener defence, allowing Palmu to easily tuck the puck behind Dawson Carty.
But just like Thursday night in Niagara, goals were coming in bunches.
With only 6:29 having been played in the game, Kitchener's Mason Kohn found a loose puck and somehow put it in the back of the Attack net on a broken play.
The Rangers increased their lead to a pair with just over four minutes left in the opening period thanks to a Gustaf Franzen wrister while the teams were skating at four on four. Franzen's goal, his 11th of the season, came just after the Attack were unable to capitalize on a golden opportunity of their own.
Kitchener continued to pile it on, making it a three goal advantage at 7:41 of the middle stanza on a Jeremy Bracco powerplay goal while the Attack were killing a bench penalty for too many men.
The Bears wouldn't give up though, capitalizing on a man advantage of their own to cut into the Rangers' lead.
With 5:51 left on the clock in the 2nd, Santino Centorame went top shelf for his 11th goal of the year, while Kevin Hancock recorded his 18th point of the season thanks to an assist. Petrus Palmu also picked up his 2nd point of the evening on the play, which made it 4-2 for Kitchener heading into the 3rd period.
Kitchener would eventually ice the game with 1:41 left in the 3rd period when Ryan MacInnis picked his 2nd goal of the evening on an empty net marker, making it a 5-2 final.
Petrus Palmu's goal and assist were enough to earn him Mac Taylor Corporation 2nd Star of the evening while Kitchener's Adam Mascherin had three assists to take home 1st star honours. Gustaf Franzen rounded out the stars of the game with his own one goal, one assist effort.
Kevin Hancock picked up Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the game, while the Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at
