Steelheads beat Wranglers 3-1

BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (29-16-3) knocked off the Las Vegas Wranglers (26-21-6) by a 3-1 score in front of a sellout crowd of 5,222 tonight at Qwest Arena.

The Steelheads never trailed in the game, as Matt McKnight wasted little time opening the scoring as he tossed a puck on the goal from a sharp angle, and the puck found its way by Las Vegas netminder Glenn Fisher to put the Steelheads on top 1-0 at 1:27 of the first period; the goal was McKnight's 8th of the year. Riley Weselowski and Kyle Radke, converted defensemen joining the center McKnight to form a forward line, contributed with the helpers on the game's first goal.

Despite the fact that the Steelheads controlled the shots-on-goal category 19-3 in the first period, the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the first period. Hugo Carpentier scored his second goal in as many games to put Las Vegas on the board, but it would be the only puck to slip by Idaho goalie Matt Climie all evening. Carpentier's goal at 14:13 of the first period was assisted by Kelly Czuy and Chris Ferraro.

The Steelheads added the final two goals of the game in the second period, and it would be all they would need on this evening. Mark Bomersback scored the eventual game-winner with his 17th at 3:23 of the second period on an attempted pass-turned-goal that found its was through Glenn Fisher, as the Steelheads went up 2-1. The goal was assisted by Bryan McGregor and Darrell Hay on the power play, and extended Bomersback's goal-scoring streak to six games; a season high for any Steelheads player.

Bryan McGregor added the insurance to make it 3-1, as he put home the rebound from a Darrell Hay point shot on the power play for his 18th goal of the year at 16:35 of the third period. Also adding an assist on the McGregor goal was Garett Bembridge, who now has at least a point in eight-of-nine games.

Matt Climie's record in net improved to 17-9-1 as he stopped 13 of 14 shots. The 14 shots allowed by the Steelheads is the fewest shots allowed all season; prior to tonight, the 15 shots allowed on December 12, 2008 in Alaska were the fewest. Glenn Fisher suffered the loss for Las Vegas, and he is now 6-2-2; he stopped 35 of 38 Idaho Shots.

The Steelheads wrap-up this set with their final home contest against the Wranglers this season, and third in four nights tomorrow night. The puck drops at 7:10 PM.
