
Steamers Earn Eleventh Straight Win

EDENTON, NC - Dave Bartuska earned his second win of the season, pitching six innings and only allowing two hits and one run to the Petersburg Generals at Hicks Field. The Steamers offense banged out 18 hits and plated 14 runs in their eleventh victory in a row.
Ryan Brenner started off the Steamer scoring in the bottom of the first after reaching on an infield single. Joey Wendle sent Brenner to third with a single, one of four hits for Wendle in the game, and Brenner scored on a throwing error charged to the pitcher Vinnie Contaldi to give the Steamers the 1-0 lead.
It remained 1-0 Edenton until the top of the third when Ryan Parker hit a Bartuska fastball into the seats to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie didn't last long, in the bottom of the third after reaching on an error Brenner went to third on another Joey Wendle single and scored on a wild pitch to give the Steamers a 2-1 lead. Adam Giacalone hit his third home run of the season to put the Steamers up 4-1 after three frames.
Edenton added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back singles by Brian Blasik and Ryan Brenner, Joey Wendle reached on an error by the first baseman Zack Helgeson that allowed Both Blasik and Brenner to score and Giacalone followed up with an RBI single scoring Wendle to give the Steamers 7-1 lead.
A solo home run by Nathan Burns in the bottom of the fifth spelled the end for Vinnie Contaldi and gave Edenton the 8-1 lead. Brett Christopher greeted the new Petersburg pitcher with a double and came home to score on Brian Blasik's RBI single to push the Steamer lead to 9-1.
Nick Gaeta picked up his eighth RBI of the season with a groundout in the bottom of the sixth to give Edenton the 10-1 lead.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Ryan Brenner and Joey Wendle added two more runs for Edenton in the bottom of the seventh to give the steamers a 12-1 lead.
Petersburg added two runs in the top of the eighth against Jordan Moore, who came on in relief of Bartuska in the top of the seventh. An RBI fielder's choice by Justin Albright and a sacrifice foul out by Tony Montalbano cut the lead to 12-3 Steamers.
Edenton rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI fielder's choice by Nathan Burns and an RBI single by Ryan Brenner to increase the lead to 14-3 Steamers.
Moore remained in the game and pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the 14-3 victory for Edenton, giving them their eleventh win in a row.
Edenton improves to 17-4 in the 2011 Coastal Plain League and inches one game closer to locking up the first half northern division title.
