Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins have announced that Garrett Wittels will join the team for the remainder of its campaign for the Coastal Plain League's Petitt Cup. Wittels, an infielder at Florida International University, hit .345 with 40 runs batted in for the Panthers in the spring. Prior to the 2011 season, Wittels was named to the National College Baseball Writers of America and Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America teams.
Wittels has been all over headlines in major national media for his stellar play. The Bay Harbor Islands, Florida native finished his sophomore season on a 56-game hitting streak, which left him two behind the NCAA Division I record set by Robin Ventura, who hit safely in 58 consecutive games in 1987. Wittels was named an All-American by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger, PING! Baseball, the American Baseball Coaches Association, Rawlings, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. His final statistics for the season included a .412 batting average and 60 RBIs, and he set the FIU single season record with 100 hits on the year.
In addition to being featured on ESPN's "Top 10 Plays" on several occasions, Wittels appeared in numerous ESPN telecasts including live cut-ins of at-bats throughout his streak, and he was featured on a segment of ESPN's First Take with hosts Jay Crawford and Dana Jacobson. Perhaps most impressively, Wittels was nominated for an ESPY Award for Best Male College Athlete. Other notable finalists included Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and basketball stars Evan Turner and John Wall.
Wittels will join the Marlins in Columbia at the end of this week and will make his Big Rock Stadium debut on Saturday, when the Marlins take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs. The Marlins and SwampDogs will be completing their game that was suspended on Tuesday at 6:05, so gates open at 5 o'clock for the GirlTalk Gynecology Ladies Night Beach Bag Giveaway. The originally scheduled game will take place afterward and will last seven innings.
The Marlins also have a home game on Sunday, welcoming the Florence RedWolves to Puck O'Neill Field. The contest will be preceded by the Morehead City Police vs. Firemen Softball game, so gates will open at 5:30 for that event, as the Marlins game will start at 7:05. It will also be Time Warner Cable Super Duper Sunday.
