-SPIKES WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON TODAY: The State College Spikes complete the 10th Season today with a Labor Day matchup on the road against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Spikes now need help to make the playoffs for a third straight year, as they now sit a game back of West Virginia and are tied for second with Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race. The Spikes must either win today to go with losses by Aberdeen and West Virginia, or win with losses by Staten Island and West Virginia, in order to make the playoffs. Whoever wins the Wild Card berth will face WIlliamsport in the best-of-3 Semifinal Series starting on Wednesday. The Crosscutters have already clinched the Pinckney Division, which the Spikes won in 2013 and 2014. The Crosscutters are 8-2 on the season against the Spikes. Today marks the 119th meeting all-time between the two clubs, with the all-time series sititng at 60-58 in favor of Williamsport.
-LAST GAME: A crowd of 5,071 fans flocked to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the State College Spikes' regular season home finale, but the Spikes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Williamsport Crosscutters and took a blow to their playoff chances. The Spikes produced double-digit hits for the third straight night with 11, but were stymied by three Williampsort double plays early. The Crosscutters took the lead in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single from Austin Bossart, and extended the advantage on an infield single by Jose Pujols in the sixth. State College then made its comeback bid in the eighth as Orlando Olivera walked and R.J. Dennard singled him to second. After a force play erased Dennard for the second out, Jesse Jenner singled in Olivera to cut the deficit in half. The Crosscutters then brought in closer Rob Tasin with runners on first and second, and the right-hander doused the threat by forcing an inning-ending groundout.
