Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - For a season that started with much promise, the Lowell Spinners season came to an end with a disappointing loss, 9-7, Monday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (37-39) once again scored in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After Jeremy Rivera singled up the middle to lead off the game, Chad De La Guerra tripled to give the Spinners a 1-0 advantage. De La Guerra came in on a Tyler Spoon single to make it 2-0.
Vermont (33-42) got a run back in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Brett Siddall to make it 2-1.
The Spinners added to their lead in the fifth inning. After a one-out double by Tate Matheny, pinch-runner Trenton Kemp scored on a base hit by Carlos Tovar. After stealing second and taking third on the throw, Tovar would come around to score on another base hit by Spoon to make it 4-1 Lowell.
The Lake Monsters took the lead in the seventh, taking advantage of an error by Aneudis Peralta. With the bases loaded, Trace Loehr doubled to left, clearing the bases and tying the game at four. Seth Brown followed with a triple to give Vermont a 5-4 lead.
Vermont padded their lead in the ninth, getting four runs against Trevor Kelley, who just nearly avoided a comebacker off his head to lead off the inning.
Down 9-4, the Spinners made things interesting in the ninth after a three-run home run by Kemp, but Vermont went to the bullpen and the Lowell rally was tamped out for a 9-7 final.
Dioscar Romero started for the Spinners and went five innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out five and finished the season strong. Austin Glorius (2-3, 2.70) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, none earned, on four hits and a walk in two innings of relief. He struck out four. Kelley was charged with four runs on six hits and a walk, striking out one over 1.2 innings before Danny Zandona recorded the final out of the Spinners season.
Tyler Hill led the way for the Lowell offense, picking up three hits, while Spoon was 2-for-4 with two RBI as part an 11-hit Spinners offensive attack.
The game represented an end of an error for Spinners baseball, with the team for sale and owner Drew Weber looking at retirement. Prior to the game, retiring Head Groundskeeper Dan Beaulieu and Clubhouse Manager "Dogman" threw out ceremonial first pitches to mark the end of the Spinners' careers.
Opening Day 2016 is to-be-determined with the Spinners annual Hot Stove Dinner on the calendar for Saturday, January 23, 2016 with a to-be-determined guest at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center.
