
Playoff Bound: Black Bears Sweep Mahoning Valley to Secure Spot in Postseason

The West Virginia Black Bears completed the sweep as they won all three games in a series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on the road at Eastwood Field. West Virginia took the first game 10-3 on Saturday, September 5. On Sunday, September 6, the Black Bears defeated the Scrappers 12-8 in a marathon game before winning the series finale 8-2 on Monday, September 7. The Black Bears have clinched the Wild Card spot in the 2015 New York-Penn League Playoffs with an overall record of 42-34.
September 5 - Black Bears tackle Mahoning Valley 10-3
West Virginia received a big day at the plate from DH Daniel Arribas as he went 2-for-3 with a solo HR and three RBI. 2B Mitchell Tolman finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff position on Saturday night. The pitching was phenomenal from SP Brandon Waddell, picking up his first professional win (1-1) in 5.0 innings pitched, allowing only one run.
September 6 - West Virginia beats Scrappers 12-8; takes first place in Wild Card
CF Casey Hughston came up big for the Black Bears in a game that would turn out to be very high-scoring. Hughston finished the night 2-for-4 for with four RBI. RF Logan Hill dominated at the plate as well, going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. RP Luis Paula picked up the win (6-2) out of the bullpen, despite pitching only 0.2 innings. With the win, Paula is now tied for the team lead in wins with SP Dario Agrazal.
September 7 - Black Bears claim final playoff spot, defeat Scrappers 8-2
The Black Bears had another big performance out of CF Casey Hughston, hitting a three-run blast and scoring two runs. DH Daniel Arribas and 2B Mitchell Tolman each picked up two hits while combining to drive in three runs. SP Jonathan Brubaker joined the six-win club (6-4) after an outstanding performance. The right-hander tossed 6.0 innings, allowing only one run with four strikeouts.

The Black Bears now return home to Monongalia County Ballpark on Wednesday, September 9, in Game One of the Semi-Final Championship Series with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. West Virginia will matchup with the Williamsport Crosscutters in the SFS with Game Two and Game Three (if necessary) being played in Williamsport.
