TROY, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (35-38) dropped the final game of the 2015 season 6-1 to the Tri-City ValleyCats (42-33) on Labor Day evening. The teams end up splitting the season series at six wins apiece.
After starter Toller Boardman was a late scratch it was Mike Vinson (0-1) who made his first professional start for Connecticut and got in hot water in the bottom of the first inning. With two-outs and nobody on base leftfielder Aaron Mizell singled and stole second. He then scored on an infield single by third basemen Bobby Wernes (2-5, 2B, R). Wernes didn't get credit for an RBI as Mizell scored after shortstop Keaton Jones threw the ball away.
Bobby Wernes won the New York-Penn League batting title with an average of .351 this summer.
Vinson worked the first two innings giving up four hits and a run. He struck out two and walked two.
With Matt Davenport on to start the third Tri-City put the game away. Wernes doubled to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by first basemen Caesar Carrasco (3-4, 2 R, RBI). The inning continued as right fielder Hector Roa drove in two with a single and second basemen Brooks Marlow also plated a run with a base hit to give the ValleyCats a 5-0 lead. In all they scored the four runs on six hits and sent nine batters to the plate.
Tri-City extended their lead to 6-0 before the Tigers plated a run in the eighth on an RBI base hit from right fielder Tanner Donnels. The Tigers loaded the bases in the inning but Yeyfry Del Rosario (SV 2) came out of the bullpen and got leftfielder Jacob Kapstein (2-4, 2B) to ground into a fielder's choice ending the inning.
The win for Tri-City went to Jose Hernandez (1-0) as he pitched three and a third innings of shut out baseball. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
Jack Fischer threw well for Connecticut as he went the final three innings. Fischer allowed just a single run on two hits and he struck out three.
Tri-City will advance to the playoffs as the two-seed and Stedler Division winners. They will take on the three-seed and McNamara Division winners the Staten Island Yankees. The other series is top-seeded Williamsport and Wild Card winner West Virginia. Williamsport won the Pickney Division. The playoffs begin Wednesday.
