Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters hosted State College for one final time during the 2015 regular season as they dropped a 5-3 decision against the Spikes.
Williamsport finishes the season with a 46-30 record and ties the 2013 squad that finished with 46 wins. The Cutters now move to the NYPL Semifinals against West Virginia starting Wednesday night at West Virginia.
On Sunday, the Cutters looked to give the home crowd something to cheer for heading into the playoffs, but would see the Spikes crack the scoreboard first. State College scored a run in the top of the third inning against Jose Taveras on a RBI single by Casey Grayson to take a 1-0 lead. Williamsport would battle back in the bottom of the fourth inning against State College starter Juan Perez. Jesus Posso tied the game up 1-1 with an RBI single to score Jose Pujols from second base. Greg Brodzinski would then give the Cutters a 2-1 lead as his RBI single scored Luis Espiritu.
Williamsport took their 2-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning with Taveras still dealing for the Cutters. Taveras struck out a season high eight batters after striking out seven Spikes batters earlier this season. State College looked poised to at least tie the game up in the sixth inning as runners would reach second and third with two outs. Ronnierd Garcia made Taveras pay as he hit his second home run of the season to give the Spikes a 4-2 lead.
Brodzinski would help the Cutters to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning as he drove in Luis Espiritu with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 4-3. State College would add a run in the top of the ninth inning against Feliberto Sanchez to take a 5-3 lead. Zach Coppola tried his best to start a rally for the Cutters in the bottom half of the inning after leading things off with a single. With one out in the inning, Carlos Duran grounded into a
6-3 double play to end the game.
