-SCENE SHIFTS FOR SPIKES AND SCRAPPERS: The State College Spikes renew acquaintances with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to start a fresh three-game set. Mahoning Valley took all three games the two teams played over the last three nights at Eastwood Field. The Spikes are 24-29 all-time against the Scrappers, with a 14-11 mark all-time at home against the Indians affiliate.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie last night's game at Eastwood Field, but the Scrappers plated two runs in the seventh inning to spoil Rinku Singh's 2011 Spikes debut and take a 6-4 victory. State College battled back in the fifth and sixth innings to knot the game, 4-4. The Spikes got RBI singles from Walker Gourley and Kyle Singer in the fifth to cut their deficit in half., then scored two runs in the sxith on a balk and a Brian Sharp RBI single. Singh allowed two hits combined with an error for the two seventh-inning Mahoning Valley runs.
-BENEDICT DRAWS START IN RESHUFFLE: Right-hander Matt Benedict gets his third start of the year tonight for State College after last week's rain forced a change in the rotation. Benedict has not allowed a run this year in 7.1 innings of work, and set down the first 11 batters he faced as a professional. The 30th round pick of the Pirates in this year's draft, Benedict has three strikeouts and no walks during his tenure with the Spikes.
-SCRAPPERS GO WITH WETMORE: Mahoning Valley starts another left-hander against the Spikes tonight as Kirk Wetmore gets the ball. Wetmore has already notched a pair of victories, and is second in the New York-Penn League in both WHIP (0.60) and opponents batting average (.118). The southpaw from Maple Valley, WA, struck out eight Auburn batters over five innings in his last start, and has allowed right-handed hitters a .042 average this year.
