Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

June 29, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds begin a five-game road trip today. First up is a three-game series with the first-place Staten Island Yankees (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Yankees). The IronBirds dropped their fourth straight series last night by falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones 1-0. Aberdeen pitchers allowed just four hits in the ball game, but the lineup couldn't get anything going against four Brooklyn pitchers. Aberdeen will try to get back in the win column tonight with right-hander David Baker on the hill. In his last outing, Baker walked a season-high five batters and struck out a 2011-best seven hitters in four innings of work against the Yankees. Right-hander William Oliver will start for the Yankees. The IronBirds mashed three homers against Oliver in his last start.

Hottest Team in the League

The Yankees are winners of a New York-Penn League best eight straight games. Staten Island currently has the best record in the league. They swept the IronBirds at Ripken Stadium in three games last week. As a team, the Yankees have the league's second-best batting average (.267) and the fifth-best ERA (3.26).

Road Woes

Both of the IronBirds two wins this season have come at Ripken Stadium. The IronBirds are 0-3 on the road so far this season, after being swept by the Cyclones at MCU Park last week. They were outscored in that series just 13-8.

Fading Fast

Although it's only 12 games into the season, the IronBirds will have to do some serious work to get back into the McNamara Division race. Because the 2-10 start has come against divisional foes, Aberdeen currently sits 7.5 games back of the first-place Yankees.

Baby Bombers

The Yankees currently have two of the top 10 hitters in the NYPL. Outfielder Shane Brown currently leads the circuit in hitting with a .469 batting average. Fellow outfielder Mason Williams is batting .341, which is good for ninth in the league. The Staten Island lineup also includes the Yankees' first-round pick (shortstop Cito Culver) and second-round pick (second baseman Angelo Gumbs) from the 2010 draft.
