Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers and Vermont Lake Monsters went back and forth on Wednesday night, with Vermont ending up on top by a final of 8-7 to take the opening game of a three-game series at Dodd Stadium.
Vermont chased Tigers starter Wilsen Palacios after facing just seven batters in the first inning, giving up three runs on three hits, walking two and only able to record two outs, allowing the Lake Monsters to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Tigers came right back though with a run in the bottom of the first on a Jason King groundout, before a huge five-run third inning turned a three-run deficit into a three-run lead, with Connecticut going on top 6-3.
King picked up another RBI with a base hit in that third frame, while an error by Vermont starter Argenis Paez allowed two runs to score for the Tigers.
However, the Lake Monsters would come back with two runs in the fifth inning to make it a one-run game. Vermont would tie the game at six in the sixth inning on a Chad Lewis RBI base hit to score Jordan Tripp.
The Tigers would retake the lead in the seventh frame. After Jeff Holm slapped a one-out base hit into center field, Zach Maggard followed with a double down the left field line to plate Holm, giving Connecticut the 7-6 lead.
As the entire game seemed to go, Vermont would not go down quietly. In the top of the eighth the Lake Monsters would tie the game back at seven on an RBI single from Jordan Tripp to score Chih Fang Pan, who led of the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to second on his third stolen base of the year.
Vermont would then take the lead later in the eighth. With Tripp the runner at third base and two outs in the inning, a wild pitch from Kevan Hess bounced away from the catcher Maggard and Tripp came racing home to score the run and put the Lake Monsters back on top for good 8-7.
The Tigers will play the second of a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM at Dodd Stadium.
