Gumbs Blasts Yankees Past IronBirds

Staten Island, NY - Staten Island second baseman Angelo Gumbs blasted two homers and scored three runs Wednesday night, as the Yankees defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds 9-1.

After starters David Baker and William Oliver tossed up goose eggs the first three innings, Staten Island got on the scoreboard in the fourth. With one man down, Angelo Gumbs blasted a solo homer to right-center. The Yankees weren't done. With two men down, Reymond Nunez walked. Shane Brown knocked him in with a triple, making it 2-0.

The IronBirds got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Chris Clinton reached on a throwing error by Yankees shortstop Cito Culver. Clinton stole second, and scored on a Wynston Sawyer RBI-single.

Staten Island tacked on another run in their half of the sixth. Gumbs blasted his second solo homer of the game to right field, making it 3-1.

The Yankees blew the game open in the eighth. They sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on just three hits. Staten Island was aided by four free passes and an IronBirds error.

With the win, Staten Island has now won nine straight games.

The IronBirds will try to even up the series tomorrow night at Richmond County Ballpark. Aberdeen will have left-hander Matthew Drummond (0-2, 9.53) on the hill. He'll go up against right-hander Wilton Rodriguez (0-1, 7.94). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
