-SPIKES START ROAD TRIP WITH DOUBLE DIP: After being postponed due to rain last night, the State College Spikes start a three-game series against the Jamestown Jammers tonight at Russell Diethrick Park with a doubleheader, and begin a six-game road trip as well. State College is 21-29 all-time against the Jammers, including a 10-15 record at Jamestown. The Spikes will have only one other road trip this season that lasts as long as six games.
-LAST GAME: 2010 fourth-round draft pick Nick Kingham notched eight of the State College Spikes' 13 strikeouts as a team in the longest outing for any State College pitcher this year, but the Spikes fell to the Auburn Doubledays at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, 5-0, on Wednedsay night. Kingham's strikeout total also ended up just one shy of the Spikes (1-5) record of nine, held by 2009 southpaw Nelson Pereira. The Spikes' team strikeout total also ended up just one shy of the franchise record of 14, set on August 26, 2006 against the Doubledays.
-HAFNER AND BENEDICT MAKE SPIKES STARTS: Right-hander Ryan Hafner gets the ball for State College this evening in game one, with righty Matt Benedict on tap for game two.. In the first start of his pro career this past Saturday, Hafner pitched a strong four innings against Williamsport, shutting out the Crosscutters on three hits and hitting one batter. Benedict, meanwhile, retired all nine batters he faced in his first pro appearance on Sunday.
-JAMMERS TO SEND OUT URENA AND REYES: Jamestown will send right-hander Jose Urena to the hill tonight in game one. Urena took the loss in his last outing, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two in a starting role. In game two, righty Helpi Reyes gets the start. Reyes also took the loss in his last start, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out three Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
