Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will try to avoid losing their seventh game in a row tonight, as they play host to the Staten Island Yankees (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Yankees). The IronBirds lost another heartbreaker last night, 3-2 in 10 innings. Right-hander David Baker will get the start tonight, attempting to end the skid. Baker looked good in his first start, surrendering just one run on three hits in five innings of work against the Hudson Valley Renegades. He'll go up against right-hander William Oliver, who struck out eight Brooklyn Cyclones hitters over four innings in his only start this season.

The Losing Streak

After winning on opening night, the IronBirds have lost six straight games. All of the losses have come against teams in the division, causing Aberdeen to falling four games out of first place. The IronBirds franchise record for most losses in a row came over the 2004-2005 seasons. Aberdeen lost the final four games of the 2004 season, and then the first six of the 2005 season totaling a 10-game losing streak.

Nail-Biters

The IronBirds have lost the six games in a row by a total of nine runs. Aberdeen has suffered three one-run losses, and two extra-inning losses. In three of the L's, the IronBirds have put the tying run in scoring position in their final at-bat, but couldn't knock him in.

Mazur Arrives

Reliever Steven Mazur has rejoined the IronBirds. The right-hander from Notre Dame has been on the roster all season, but has been in Florida, continuing to rehab from shoulder surgery. Mazur served as Aberdeen's closer last season, going 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA and six saves.

Manny Being Manny

2010 IronBirds shortstop Manny Machado has had some week. On Tuesday, Machado picked up two hits in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. He was then promoted to the Advanced-A Frederick Keys. Before his first game with Frederick, he, along with Jonathan Schoop, was named to the Future's Game. Machado followed that up by blasting a home run in his first game for the Keys last night.
