Salt Lake City Stars News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Salt Lake City Stars defeated the Iowa Wolves 138-103 tonight at Wells Fargo Arena, earning a road win to start the 2018-19 campaign. The Stars' 35-point win matches the franchise mark for the largest margin of victory in a game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau (previous: 129-94, 1/11/17 vs. Grand Rapids).

The Stars (1-0) were led by No. 1 overall draft pick Willie Reed, who tallied an NBA G League career-high 34 points and a game-high 14 rebounds on 15-of-17 (.882) from the field in 28 minutes and finished with a game-high plus/minus of +42. Utah Jazz two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh recorded 18 points and five rebounds, while Isaiah Cousins scored 24 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Tony Bradley, on assignment from the Utah Jazz, was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards, and Jairus Lyles finished with 15 points, five assists and a game-high three steals. Akeem Springs scored 14 points off the bench in 23 minutes.

Iowa (0-1) was paced by NBA G League veteran Darius Johnson-Odom, who scored 27 points on 3-of-5 (.600) from three-point range. Canyon Barry, son of NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, scored 18 points off the bench in his NBA G League debut, while Hakim Warrick, who was selected ninth overall in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, grabbed 11 rebounds, the most by any reserve player in the game.

The Stars scored 138 points in the game and 76 points in the first half, which are both record marks for scoring in a game and any half in the Salt Lake City era (since 2016-17). The Stars jumped out to a 13-2 lead, but the Wolves tied it 19-apiece with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter. Salt Lake City went on an 8-0 run and never looked back, finishing the first quarter with 40 points (the Stars recorded five 40-point frames last season). Tonight's win is the first in a season opener for the Stars/Idaho Stampede franchise since a home victory against Bakersfield to start the 2013-14 campaign.

The Stars shot 59.1 percent from the field and 44.8 percent from three-point range, holding Iowa to 44.7 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three. The Stars held the edge in rebounding (45-38), assists (21-14) and steals (9-8). Salt Lake City finished the game with 76 points in the paint.

The Stars will return to Salt Lake City for their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. (MT) against the Texas Legends at Vivint Smart Home Arena, home of the Utah Jazz. Tickets are still available for the home opener at slcstars.com.
