
Drive Drop Season Opener in Erie

ERIE - Stellar performances in the second and fourth quarters lifted the Erie BayHawks (1-0) to a 125-114 win
over the Grand Rapids Drive (0-1) at home Friday night. The Drive rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to take a 91-90 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the BayHawks locked down defensively in the fourth, giving up just two points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter on their way to the win.
RJ Hunter poured in a game-high 34 points for the BayHawks and Terrence Jones led all bench players with 25 points and eight rebounds. Jones' 25 points outpaced the entire Drive bench's total of 18 points. Hunter and Jones also each finished with plus-16 plus-minus ratings, the highest of the game. Daniel Hamilton also had a big day with a triple-double for the BayHawks (13 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) and two- way player Jaylen Adams added 23 points, hitting six three-pointers.
Two-way player Zach Lofton almost had a triple-double of his own for the Drive, shaking off a slow start to finish with 26 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Fellow two-way player Keenan Evans scored 23 points, and the Drive also got two strong performances from Pistons assignees as Khyri Thomas scored 22 points and Henry Ellenson had 19 points and 11 rebounds, hitting nine of his 12 free throw attempts.
Erie looked to pull away early as they jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead, but the Drive quickly responded with a 13-0 run, the first of several runs that impacted the game. Grand Rapids was firing three-pointers all game, shooting 50 of them compared to 27 from Erie, but they hit only one more than the home team (14 to 13). The BayHawks also boasted a big advantage on the boards with a 62-37 rebounding advantage that helped them stay consistent. Seven Erie players recorded at least five rebounds.
The Drive had a 15-point advantage in the third quarter, but the BayHawks outscored the Drive by 22 points in the second and fourth quarters combined.
The BayHawks will look to keep it going as they square off again in Erie against the Lakeland Magic Saturday night. The Drive will also play again Saturday, as they host the Windy City Bulls for their home opener.
