Salt Lake City Stars News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars won their home opener tonight in front of a franchise record crowd of 7,455 at Vivint Smart Home Arena, the home of the Utah Jazz, defeating the Texas Legends 106-96 to improve to 2-0 this season. It marks the first time the Stars/Idaho Stampede franchise has started a season with a 2-0 record since 2013-14.
Salt Lake City (2-0) was led by Utah Jazz two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh, who recorded a double-double with a game-high 35 points (22 in the first half) on 11-of-19 (.579) from the field and 11 rebounds. Cavanaugh connected on nine three-pointers (9-of-14 3FG), which ties the franchise mark for most threes made in a game held by Naz Mitrou-Long (3/19/18 at Rio Grande Valley). Willie Reed, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, recorded his second-straight 30/10 game with 31 points and a game-high 16 rebounds on 14-of-20 (.700) from the floor. Jairus Lyles finished with five points and eight helpers, the most assists by a Stars player in a game this season, and Stephaun Branch tallied an NBA G League career-high four blocks to go with six rebounds. Utah Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long tallied 18 points and six assists in his season debut with the Stars.
Texas (1-1) was paced by Daryl Macon, who led the Legends in scoring for the second-straight game with 23 points to go with five rebounds in 39 minutes. Ray Spalding, currently on assignment from the Dallas Mavericks, tallied 19 points, three blocks and two steals, while Codi Miller-McIntyre dished out a game-high 10 assists to go with seven points and four steals. Jameel Warney led all reserves with 20 points off the bench.
The Stars trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter and overcame a 10-point halftime deficit (56-46) to record the victory. Salt Lake City held Texas scoreless for the final 4:13 of the game, scoring 10 unanswered points sparked by Willie Reed's dunk with 3:51 remaining. The Stars outscored the Legends 60-40 in the second half to claim the victory.
Salt Lake City held the edge in rebounds (50-44) and assists (28-21) while outshooting the Legends from the floor (.443-.391) and three-point range (.382-.238). Texas recorded more steals (13-8) and blocks (6-4).
The Stars will face the Legends once again in Texas on Friday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. (MT).
