Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Huntsville Stars knocked out 15 hits to beat the Birmingham Barons 12-5 in front of 1,699 on Wednesday evening at the Hoover Met.

The Barons returned to Birmingham after the longest road trip of the year and showed signs of being a little road weary. The offense could only muster seven hits and the pitching staff surrendered 15 hits and eight walks.

Despite the rough outing, the Barons took an early lead on a first inning homer by recent call-up Jeremy Reed. The jack was his third in his 12 games with the Barons and extended his hitting streak to ten games. Reed went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and is currently batting .458 for the Barons. He has hit safely in 11 of his 12 Double-A games.

The early fireworks for the Barons didn't last long as the Stars got to starter Byeong An (2-1) in the third and the fourth. Huntsville knocked around the young left-hander and score four runs in both innings to take an 8-1 lead. The third was highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Corey Hart and Kade Johnson blasted a two-run homer in the fourth.

Birmingham scored a run in the sixth when Chad Durham scored on a double-play groundout by Reed to cut the score to 8-2 but Huntsville tacked on four more runs with a two spot in the seventh and the ninth to push the score to 12-2.

Carlos Maldonado gave the Barons a little life in the bottom of the ninth as he crushed a three-run homer to left-center field but it was too little too late as the Stars closed it out from there.

Tomorrow the two teams wrap up the short two-game series as the Barons send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (5-5, 3.47) to face RHP Mike Adams (3-3, 3.06). Game time is 7:00 PM and all the action can be heard on 1260 AM with Doug Bell on the play-by-play.
