Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears saved perhaps their best game of the season for their biggest crowd of the season Thursday night. The BayBears defeated the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 8-1 in front of 6,388 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Mobile starter, Roger Deago earned the win with an outstanding performance. Deago (6-5) threw a season-high eight innings allowing just one run on seven base hits while striking out six. The left-hander was coming off the month of June in which he went 1-3 with a 6.17 ERA.
Once again the BayBears jumped out early, but this time they expanded their lead and coasted to victory. Mobile scored twice in the first inning as Jake Gautreau drove in Todd Donovan with a single to left and Danny Bravo brought home Gautreau with an infield groundout.
Vince Faison led off the second with his fourth homerun of the season, a laser shot over the wall in right-center field. The homerun gave the BayBears a 3-0 lead.
Deago gave up his lone run in the top of the sixth. Aron Weston and Ray Sadler hit back-to-back doubles with one out, accounting for all of the Diamond Jaxx scoring.
The BayBears exploded for five runs in the sixth against West Tenn starter John Webb. With one out, Rico Washington hit a towering solo homerun to right to get things started. The next five batters reached, with four scoring. Jon Benick drove in Jon Knott with a single to center. Faison was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Humberto Quintero drove in two with a double that hugged the left field line.
The BayBears are now back in a four-way tie for first place in the Southern League's Western Division with West Tenn, Birmingham, and Huntsville. The BayBears now travel to Huntsville to take on the Stars in a four-game series beginning Friday night. RHP Chris Oxspring (5-3; 3.65) will get the start on the mound for Mobile.
