July 3, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
Chattanooga, Tenn. â The Orlando Rays and Chattanooga Lookouts split a doubleheader for the second straight night at Bell South Stadium in Chattanooga.
GAME 1 â Rays 9, Lookouts 5
Orlando escaped with a 9-5 win after blowing an early 5-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader.
The Rays put three runs on the board in the first inning and added two more in the second, staking starter Jon Switzer (6-8) to a 5-0 lead. Chattanooga answered with five runs in the bottom of the second, tying the game at 5-5. The Rays squeezed a run across in the 4th inning before adding three insurance runs in the seventh.
After surviving the five-run second, Switzer settled down and tossed five straight scoreless innings, finishing with a complete-game win, allowing five earned runs on six hits and one walk. The left-hander also struck out five in snapping a personal two-game losing skid.
Amado German went 2-4 with a double, three RBI and one run scored, while Dan DeMent continued swinging a hot bat, going 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. B.J. Barns added a 3-3 effort and also scored one run.
GAME 2 â Lookouts 7, Rays 4
Chattanooga wasted little time in getting to Orlando starter Matt White, tagging the big right-hander for six runs â all earned â on five hits and four walks over just 1 2/3 innings pitched. With the Lookouts staked to an early 6-1 lead after just two innings the Rays were forced into rally mode, but could manage only three runs over the final five frames, falling 7-4 in the nightcap. Dan Guillory, Alex Santos and Jarrett Campbell combined on 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Rays, who saw their brief two-game win streak stopped in the loss. B.J. Barns went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI for the Rays, who dropped to 5-10 in the second half of Southern League season. Jonny Gomes went 1-3 with a double, run scored and RBI, and also swiped his team leading 14th base of the season.
Orlando next heads to Zebulon, N.C. for a three-game series with the Carolina Mudcats. The O-Rays went 4-3 in seven meetings between the teams in the first half of the season. The Rays will send RHP Jim Magrane (7-3, 3.86) to the mound to square off against LHP Ryan Snare (5-3, 3.84). Following the three-game series with the Mudcats most of the Rays will enjoy a few days off, as the Southern League All-Star break starts Monday. Orlando will send three representatives â all starting pitchers - to the game: RHP Jim Magrane, RHP Jose Veras and LHP Jon Switzer.
