WEST VALLEY CITY, UT. - The Salt Lake City Stars (8-6), the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, overcame a late comeback effort by the G League Ignite (4-10), winning at the final buzzer 114-112 tonight at the Maverik Center.
Salt Lake City was led by Utah Jazz assignment player Brice Sensabaugh, who secured a game-high 28 points on four-of-nine shooting from three, and knocked in the game winning shot with 0.2 remaining on the clock. Jazz two-way guard Josh Christopher added 27 points, grabbed 12 boards, and dished out four assists for a double double. Isaiah Miller chipped in 20 points, five assists, and six rebounds off the bench, while Nick Ongenda recorded a season-high 15 points and five blocks in his first start of the year.
The Stars jumped out to an early 10-point lead in the first quarter, knocking down four of their first seven three-pointers. Stars center Ongenda poured in nine of his 15 points in the first. The Ignite used a short 6-0 run at the end of the first frame, cutting the Stars lead to 28-24 . Salt Lake City responded, pushing the lead to as much as 13 points on 59% shooting from the field. The Stars relied on 11 points from Sensabaugh, and eight from Christopher, as they took a 66-56 lead over the G League Ignite to end the half.
Ignite seized momentum in the second half, opening the third frame on a 10-3 spurt, before being outscored by Salt Lake City 28-19 the rest of the quarter. Salt Lake City took another double-digit advantage into the fourth, but relinquished the lead for the first time all game with just 4:19 remaining. An 18-4 Ignite run set the stage for the teams to trade baskets.
Tied at 112, the Stars drew up an inbound play for Sensabaugh with 2.6 seconds remaining. The 2023 NBA first round draft pick hit a one-legged fadeaway jumper on the baseline to seal the 114-112 Stars victory.
Seven Ignite players scored in double figures. *John *Jenkins led Ignite with 26 points, seven assists, and two rebounds. Ron Holland poured in 17 points, while ripping away five steals.
Salt Lake City will play in Orlando, Fla., for the annual NBA G League Winter Showcase held Dec. 19-22. The team awaits the announcement of their Showcase Cup draw. They will resume regular season play against the Ontario Clippers Thursday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. MT. at the Delta Center, home of the Utah Jazz. The contest will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN+.
