Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and Houston Aeros met for the first time this season at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday in the only game on the American Hockey League slate. The Stars special teams was the difference in this one, scoring three power-play goals en-route to a 6-4 victory over the AHL's second place team.
Loui Eriksson notched his second goal in as many games to start the scoring off for the Stars at 6:49 of the first period. Goaltender Mike Smith picked-up his second assist of the season on the goal. Houston registered the game's second and third power-play goal when leading rookie scorer Pat O'Sullivan scored his 24th goal of the season and Matt Foy had his sixth to give Houston a 2-1 lead at the end of one period.
Both teams came out firing in the second period, scoring a combined four goals between the two of them, including three by Iowa. Kyle Brodziak, Yan Stastny and Jamie Johnson all found the back of the net for Iowa. All three Iowa goals came in a span of 3:30. Johnson's power-play goal was the 11th time that Iowa has recorded at least two power-play goals in a game.
Entering the third period with a lead has been very beneficial for the Stars so far this season. Despite giving up the tying goal midway through the third period, Krys Barch gave Iowa a lead they would not relinquish. Eriksson scored the sixth and final goal to seal the victory for Iowa at 12:20 of the third. Iowa is now 17-2-1-0 overall and 11-1-1-0 at home when they take a lead into the third period.
