Calgary Stampeders News Release
With their first pick (seventh overall) in the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft, the Calgary Stampeders have selected University of Texas-El Paso offensive lineman Brander Craighead.
The six-foot-six, 280-lb. Ottawa product plays tackle for the Miners and will return to UTEP as a senior in 2013.
"He's a very athletic young man. He's a very good football player," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "I'm very pleased we were able to acquire this young man."
Craighead has spent four years at UTEP including the 2010 campaign when he was redshirted. Prior to attending UTEP, he played one season at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and Mother Teresa Catholic School in Nepean, Ont.
The Stampeders also own two picks - 13th and 16th overall - in the second round of the 2013 draft. The Stamps also have one third-round pick (25th overall), two fourth-round picks (28th and 34th), one sixth-round pick (48th) and one seventh-round pick (59th).
The seventh round was added to the CFL Canadian Draft this year as a response to an increase in the depth of Canadian talent.
The Stampeders' current roster features 24 players who were chosen in the CFL draft including 19 Calgary selections. Three Calgary first-round selections - Rob Maver (2010), Dimitri Tsoumpas (2008) and Jon Cornish (2006) - were selected as CFL all-stars in 2012.
Stampeders season tickets are on sale now for the 2013 season. For more information, visit Stampeders.com or call 403-289-0258 to speak with a customer service representative.
