St. Louis CITY SC Selects O'Malley and Klein, Make Three Trades at 2023 MLS SuperDraft

ST. LOUIS - In the first MLS SuperDraft for expansion-side St. Louis CITY SC, St. Louis made two selections and collected up to $550,000 in General Allocation Money. CITY SC selected Owen O'Malley with the ninth overall selection and then took St. Louis University midfielder John Klein with the 30th overall (2nd round/1st pick) spot.

CITY SC began the night with the first overall selection and traded it to Charlotte FC for the 20th overall selection and $200,000 in 2023 GAM and $200,000 in 2024 GAM with up to $50,000 in conditional GAM (25 in '23 and 25 in '24). St. Louis then re-entered the first round with a trade with Seattle as CITY SC received the ninth overall pick for the 59th overall pick (3rd round/1st pick) and $175,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money.

CITY SC then used its ninth pick for O'Malley from Creighton University. The 6-foot midfielder just completed his sophomore season where he tallied eight goals and five assists and started all 23 matches. He helped Creighton reach the 2022 NCAA Tournament College Cup Semifinals.

St. Louis traded the 20th pick, which they received from Charlotte FC, to Austin FC for $50,000 in 2023 GAM with up to $50,000 in conditional 2023 GAM.

CITY SC wrapped up their first-ever MLS SuperDraft by drafting Klein with the first pick of the second round (30th overall). The Columbia, Missouri, native tallied a strong collegiate career with 29 goals and 27 assists in 88 matches played. Klein's top collegiate season was in 2021 where he played all 20 games, recorded seven goals and a career-best 15 assists while leading St. Louis University to NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals appearance.
