Charlotte FC Drafts Four Players in 2023 MLS SuperDraft, Selecting Hamady Diop First Overall

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte FC today drafted four players in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas.

The Club began the night by trading up to $450K General Allocation Money (GAM) to St. Louis CITY SC in exchange for the #1 overall pick. St. Louis also received CLTFC's 2023 #20 overall pick. Charlotte FC then selected defender Hamady Diop, a national title winner at Clemson University, first overall.

Later in the first round, CLTFC again executed a trade, this time sending $50K in 2023 GAM, an additional $50K GAM if certain incentives are met, and Charlotte FC's 2024 first round selection to the Colorado Rapids to obtain the #12 overall selection. Charlotte FC then selected forward Patrick Agyemang of the University of Rhode Island.

In the second round, Charlotte FC selected forward Nick Scardina of the University of Washington at #40 overall. In the third round, the Club selected midfielder Andrew Privett of Penn State at #69 overall.

Name: Hamady Diop

College: Clemson University

Selection: Round 1 Pick 1 (#1 Overall)

Bio: Diop won the 2021 NCAA College Cup, clinching Clemson's third national title alongside current CLTFC goalkeeper George Marks. Diop anchored a Tigers backline that pitched nine shutouts across his 20 starts, while also contributing three goals and three assists. The versatile defender was named to the second-team All-ACC team in both his sophomore (2021) and junior (2022) seasons. He was named to the ACC All-Freshman team in 2020. Prior to the draft, Diop was one of 11 elite collegiate underclassmen signed to a Generation adidas contract. Per MLS rules, these contracts are not charged against a team's annual salary budget.

Bio: Agyemang scored 19 goals and added 12 assists over 37 career games with Rhode Island. The speedy forward, who was clocked as the fastest player at this year's Combine, was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team in both 2021 and 2022.

Name: Nick Scardina

College: University of Washington

Selection: Round 2 Pick 11 (#40 Overall)

Bio: Scardina scored 18 goals and added seven assists over the course of his four-year career with the Huskies, helping Washington to a runner-up finish at the 2021 NCAA College Cup. In 2022, he was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference First Team after appearing in all 20 matches with 19 starts.

Name: Andrew Privett

College: Penn State

Selection: Round 3 Pick 11 (#69 Overall)

Bio: Privett had a breakout season for the Nittany Lions in 2021, leading the team in goals with nine while also contributing four assists. Over his four-year stay with the program, he made 68 total appearances with 44 starts and was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team as a junior in 2021.

The MLS SuperDraft allows clubs to select some of college soccer's most promising talent. Expansion teams are awarded the first overall pick, followed by reverse order of teams that did not qualify for the Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs and then teams in order of elimination from playoffs.
