(Trenton, NJ) - A five-run fifth inning fueled the Richmond Flying Squirrels (58-47) to an 8-3 victory over the Trenton Thunder (56-49) on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. In game one of the four-game set, Richmond's offense used five runs and five hits in the sixth inning to chase Dellin Betances from the game and give the Thunder their first loss since last Saturday in Bowie. The Trenton offense was limited to just three RBI-singles from Melky Mesa, Jose Pirela and Austin Romine.

Early in the game, the Thunder's 1-0 lead looked like it would be more than enough. Melky Mesa drove in Corban Joseph in the bottom of the first to give Trenton the early one-run advantage, and Dellin Betances was nearly unhittable in his first five frames. On just 44 pitches through five innings, Betances retired thirteen of fifteen Flying Squirrels' hitters and did not walk a batter.

However, Betances ran into trouble for the first time on Thursday night in the top of the sixth. To begin the inning, Betances allowed a single to centerfield, two infield hits and a bases loaded walk to allow Richmond to tie the score at 1-1. With the bases loaded and still nobody retired, Roger Kieschnick and Chris Dominguez both singled to bring in a combined three runs and Richmond all of the sudden led 4-1. Pat Venditte was called upon to finish the sixth inning after Betances left after just 63 pitches.

The Thunder will welcome the Flying Squirrels back to Waterfront Park on Friday night at 7:05 PM for the second game of the four-game set. Trenton will give the pearl to RHP Graham Stoneburner (1-1, 1.69), while Richmond will counter with LHP Eric Surkamp (8-3, 2.00). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR and online at trentonthunder.com.

The first 2,000 fans (6+) to Friday's game will receive Andy Pettitte Bobbleheads (Thunder Road Uniforms) courtesy of Hyundai. For ticket information, log on to trentonthunder.com or call 609-394-3300.
