Chesapeake Baysox News Release
New Britain, Conn. - The Baysox overcame an early deficit to beat the New Britain Rock Cats 3-2 in first game of a road trip Thursday evening. With the win, the Baysox improve to 57-46 on the season.
The bottom of the Baysox lineup provided the offense production Thursday night, as the bottom four hitters accounted for all three runs, four out of six hits, and all three RBIs. Batting seventh, designated hitter Buck Britton's triple was also the Baysox only extra base hit of the game.
The Rock Cats jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against right-handed starting pitcher Tim Bascom. With two outs, Joe Benson singled to center field and Chris Parmelee followed with a home run to center field that gave New Britain a 2-0 lead.
The Baysox got one run back in the top of the fifth inning against New Britain starter Matt Schuld. Britton hit a lead off triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Pedro Florimon to make the score 2-1.
Bowie took the lead for the first time in the top of the seventh inning against New Britain reliever Bruce Pugh. With one out, catcher Steve Lerud drew a walk and went to second when Britton singled to second base. Florimon advanced both runners on a groundout and right fielder Ronnie Welty cleared the bases with a single to right field that put the Baysox up 3-2.
Bascom pitched six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out eight to earn his team-leading seventh win of the season. Bascom is 4-0 in five starts in July and the eight strikeouts were a season-high.
Right-handed reliever Pat Egan pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Bascom and struck out one while allowing just one hit. Right-handed reliever Brandon Cooney pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
With a single in the top of the fourth inning, center fielder Xavier Avery extended his hitting streak to 13 games, tying the season-high set by Britton. Avery's previous season long hit streak was 11 games.
The Baysox were out-hit by the Rock Cats 9-6, but used a critical sacrifice bunt and a two-out hit by Welty to make their hits count.
Friday, RHP Oliver Drake (1-2, 8.87) takes the mound for the Baysox in Game 1 of a double header against New Britain Rock Cats. His opponent will be RHP Steve Hirschfield (7-6, 3.66).
The Baysox began a five game road trip to New Britain Thursday, July 28 and are back home for seven games starting Tuesday, August 2. The seven-game home stand includes, 105.7 The Fan Night featuring a Scott Garceau bobblehead giveaway Wednesday, August 3, Navy Night Friday, August 5 and the Un-Birthday Big Birthday Bash Sunday August 7.
