New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Matt Schuld turned in his strongest performance since joining the Rock Cats but Bowie scored two runs in the seventh against the bullpen to take the opening game, 3-2 on Thursday night.
The Rock Cats took an early lead when Chris Parmelee connected for a two-run homer over the center field wall in the first inning. Joe Benson - who reached base on a two-out single - scored on the homer.
Schuld retired the first six straight - and eight of the first nine - batters he faced. In the fourth, Bowie loaded up the bases with no outs. Xavier Avery and Greg Miclat led off the inning with consecutive singles before LJ Hoes drew a walk. Schuld then fielded a grounder off the bat of Joe Mahoney and was able to force Avery out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Schuld then forced the next two batters to pop out and ground out to escape the jam without any damage.
The Baysox finally got to Schuld in the fifth. Buck Britton (3-for-4) tripled to open the inning and scored on Pedro Florimon Jr.'s sacrifice bunt down the first baseline to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
That was the only run Schuld would allow as he limited the Baysox to four hits and one walk and struck out four over six innings.
The Rock Cats handed the ball to reliever Bruce Pugh in the seventh. Pugh issued a one out walk before Britton reached on a base hit. With two outs, Ronnie Welty lined a single into right field to plate both runs and put the Baysox in front for the first time of the night, 3-2.
Bowie's Timothy Bascom (7-2) scattered eight hits over six innings. He struck out eight.
Connecticut native and Quinnipiac product Pat Egan entered the game in the seventh and tossed two shutout innings to hold the lead for the Baysox. Brandon Cooney closed out the game in the ninth to notch his seventh save.
Pugh (0-3) suffered the loss. He finished with two hits and two runs while striking out four in three innings.
OF NOTE: The Rock Cats take on Bowie in a single-admission doubleheader on Friday. The first game is slated for a 4:35 P.M. first pitch.
ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: DH Buck Britton went 3-for-4 with one triple and scored two runs for Bowie.
