
Carreno Takes Over EL Strikeout Lead

(Manchester, NH)-Joel Carreno added seven more strikeouts to his Eastern League lead on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series with Reading before 7,156 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The Phillies topped the Fisher Cats 6-1.
Carreno, a 24-year old right-hander from the Domincan Republic, also leads the Blue Jays Minor League organization with 136 strikeouts (in 114.2 innings pitched). Thursday night's performance marked the 13th time in 20 starts that Carreno has struck out at least seven in a game. His season high is 11.
Carreno, now 7-8, allowed four runs on six hits in five innings. He walked a season-high six batters. Despite the loss, the Fisher Cats kept a one-game lead over second place Trenton, who also lost. Reading is now just two games out of first place in a tight Eastern League Eastern Division.
In the top of the first inning, Reading's Michael Spidale tripled and Matt Rizzotti (3-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) followed with his 19th homer to put the Phillies up 2-0.
The Fisher Cats (57-48) made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first. Adeiny Hechavarria singled, moved to third on a stolen base and error and scored on a fly to left field.
The Phillies (55-50) scored again in the fourth inning. Fidel Hernandez reached on a fielders choice, advanced to third on a single by Tuffy Gosewisch, and scored on a single by Freddy Galvis . After a single by Spidale, Rizzotti drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-1.
Galvis homered in the eighth and Rizzotti doubled and scored on a Carlos Rivero sacrifice fly in the ninth inning for the game's final run.
Austin Hyatt (10-5) earned the win. He allowed one run (unearned) on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six batters.
