Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Richmond Flying Squirrels got outstanding starting efforts for right-handers Daryl Maday and David Mixon en route to a doubleheader sweep of the New Britain Rock Cats on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium, winning game one 3-1 and taking game two 2-0.
Maday (3-0), who entered game one of the doubleheader having not allowed a run in 16 2/3 innings, saw his streak end at 17 in the bottom of the first inning as Rene Tosoni doubled home Ben Revere with a 1-0 Rock Cats' lead. After allowing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second inning, the 24-year-old retired the next eight batters he faced. Maday finished the night giving up just the lone run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two.
Richmond's offense came to life in the top of the third inning. With Clay Timpner aboard via a leadoff walk, Brandon Crawford launched his second home run of the season to right-center field off of New Britain starter Tyler Robertson (0-1) to put the Flying Squirrels ahead 2-1. The Squirrels added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single off of the bat of Conor Gillaspie.
Left-hander Jake Stevens and right-hander Rafael Cova combined on 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief with Cova recording his Eastern League-leading sixth save in the process.
Mixon (2-1) worked around a first-inning jam and cruised the rest of the way in the game two victory. After giving up a leadoff double to Ben Revere, Mixon fielded a come-backer to the mound off of the bat of Mark Dolenc and caught Revere in a run down. Both Revere and Dolenc ended up on second with Revere being ruled out. The Richmond starter then caught a break as the next batter, Rene Tosoni, hit a ball that caromed high off of the first base bag and was gloved by first basemen Andy D'Alessio. The bounce kept Dolenc at third and limited Tosoni to an infield single instead of a run-scoring double. Whit Robbins followed by hitting into a 4-6-3 double play ending the threat.
Mixon breezed through the next six innings as he allowed only two base runners - a Dolenc leadoff single in the fourth and a one-out walk to Robbins in the same frame - the rest of the way. The 25-year-old struck out five while issuing the lone walk. He retired the final 11 batters he faced.
The Flying Squirrels offense secured all of the runs it would need against New Britain starter Mike McCardell (0-2) in the top of the first inning. After Crawford drew a one-out walk, Thomas Neal drove him in with a RBI double to left field.
Richmond manufactured its other run in the top of the third inning. After Skyler Stromsmoe doubled to left-center, Darren Ford advanced him to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Stromsmoe then scored on a Crawford sacrifice fly to center field giving the Squirrels a 2-0 advantage.
The Flying Squirrels (10-9) will aim for the sweep of the Rock Cats (4-14) and a winning road trip on Wednesday morning as LHP Craig Clark (1-1, 3.07) gets the start for Richmond against RHP Deolis Guerra (1-1, 3.50) for New Britain. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM at New Britain Stadium.
