Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats (13-10) upended the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-2, in front of 3,604 at New Britain Stadium on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Squirrels fall to 1-4 on their current seven-game road trip and 2-9 overall on the road in 2011.
For the fifth consecutive ballgame, the Squirrels plated the first run. It came in the top of the third inning against New Britain right-hander Bobby Lanigan. Mike Mcbryde led off the inning and doubled to left field. A batter later, Jose Flores rolled a single through the right-side of the infield to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.
New Britain quickly drew even against Richmond right-hander Justin Fitzgerald in the bottom of the inning. Dan Rohlfing led off with a single, and moved to third when Chris Cates singled behind him. He scored to even the ballgame, 1-1, when Fitzgerald delivered a wild-pitch with Mike Hollimon at the plate.
Fitzgerald found more trouble as the Rock Cats took the lead in the fourth inning. Chris Parmalee started the frame with a single and Evan Bigley singled behind him. Yangervis Solarte followed with a single to center field, scoring Parmalee. On the play, Juan Perez threw to the plate, prompting Bigley to try to take third base. Johnny Monell threw him out there for the first out of the inning. However, Ray Chang contributed the fourth consecutive hit, a double into the alley in right-center field to score Solarte for a 3-1 New Britain lead.
Jose Flores sparked the Squirrels as they got a run back against Lanigan in the sixth. Flores ripped a first-pitch triple to center field as he led off the inning. On the next pitch, Justin Christian brought him in with a ground out to the shortstop, and the Squirrels trailed, 3-2.
Fitzgerald came back out in the sixth, and Bigley greeted him with a double to center field. Solarte then sent a come-backer to the mound that glanced off of Fitzgerald and bounced toward third base. Fitzgerald scrambled to it, and threw wildly to first base. Bigley scored on the play for a 4-2 Rock Cats' advantage.
Fitzgerald (2-1) departed to the loss after Bigley scored. Ronnie Ray entered and finished the inning. Fitzgerald worked five-plus innings, conceding a season-high nine hits. He was charged with four earned runs, as he walked three and struck out three. He lost for the first time on the year and at the Double-A level.
Lanigan worked through seven solid innings for the win, allowing a pair of runs on five hits. He walked none and struck out six as he won for the second time on the season and avenged a loss to Fitzgerald in their first meeting on April 8th. Right-hander Cole Devries worked the final two innings for his fifth save of the season.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Wednesday night at New Britain Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (0-2, 5.40) will make the start for the Flying Squirrels against RHP Steve Hirschfeld (1-0, 2.050 for the Rock Cats.
