Squirrels Fall in Series Finale, 6-2, against Fightins

RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Flying Squirrels had their five-game win streak snapped in a 6-2 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.

The Flying Squirrels (17-22) won five of the six games against the Fightin Phils (17-22) over the homestand.

Trailing by one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Grant McCray drew a leadoff walk against Reading reliever Mitch Neunborn. Luis Toribio shot a line drive to center field to score McCray and tied the game, 2-2.

Richmond reliever Tanner Kiest (Loss, 2-1) issued back-to-back walks in the top of the seventh inning with two outs. After Nick Garcia replaced Kiest, Carlos De La Cruz sent Reading ahead, 4-2, with a two-run double to left field.

The Fightin Phils moved to a 6-2 lead in the ninth inning on RBI singles by De La Cruz and Trevor Schwecke.

The Flying Squirrels went hitless across the final three innings. Andrew Schultz (Win, 1-0) retired four straight across 1.1 innings alongside hitless outings by Cristian Hernandez and Tommy McCollum.

Toribio rocketed the Flying Squirrels to a 1-0 advantage in the second inning with an RBI single.

Reading answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning against Richmond starter Matt Frisbee, who racked up four strikeouts in four innings.

The Flying Squirrels are off Monday before starting a six-game road trip against the Bowie Baysox on Tuesday. Right-hander Ryan Murphy (1-3, 2.81) will make the start for Richmond and first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

The team will be back at home on Tuesday, May 28, to start a six-game series against the Erie SeaWolves. On Tuesday, the first 1,000 fans ages 15 and older will receive a Flying Squirrels "Is the Game Still On?" Umbrella giveaway presented by Pepsi.
