Spurs Fall Short to the Herd

LAS VEGAS - The Austin Spurs (5-13) fell to the Wisconsin Herd (8-10) 114-112 in their final matchup at the 2022 NBA G League Winter Showcase at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Charles Bassey led six Spurs in double figures, posting a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Alize Johnson recorded his sixth double-double for the Spurs as he added 10 points and 19 rebounds while Jordan Hall chipped with 19 points.

Austin traded baskets with Wisconsin in the first quarter, with Tommy Khuse ending the first frame with a buzzer beater lay-up to cut the lead down to two, 28-31. A tightly contested first half of play resulted in a 61-60 deficit for the Spurs. The game was competitive throughout the third quarter, as the Spurs and the Herd tied in field goal percentage at 42.9%, both shooting 9-21 from the field. In the fourth quarter, the first team to score 114 points wins the game. Jordan Murphy recorded his lone block of the game, leading to an Alize Johnson hook shot to tie 112 all. Following a Spurs foul, Lindell Wigginton hit both his free throws to hit the 114 target to win the game for the Herd.

Guard AJ Green led the Herd with 19 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists while center Jontay Porter earned a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Forward Sandro Mamukelashvili finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Seven members on the Herd scored in double digits.
