Iowa Wolves News Release
LAS VEGAS - The short-handed Iowa Wolves lost to Rio Grande Valley, 125-119, in its final game at the 2022 AT&T NBA G League Winter Showcase on Wednesday at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
Rio Grande Valley (13-5) rallied from 26 points down at the start the fourth quarter for the comeback victory over Iowa (11-7), which only had eight available players. Guard Emmanuel Mudiay missed his second straight game due to injury and guard Javonte Cooke, who led the Wolves in scoring in Monday's Showcase Opener versus Ontario, also missed the game due to injury. All eight available players logged 10 or more minutes in the team's second game in three days.
Iowa led 100-74 going into the untimed fourth quarter and needed to score 25 points for the win under the Target Score rules in place for the Showcase. Rio Grande Valley blistered the nets in the fourth outscoring Iowa, 41-19. The Vipers limited the Wolves to 28.6% (4-of-14) shooting, including just 25% from three (2-of-8) while forcing nine turnovers and scoring 18 points in the paint.
For Iowa, Bettendorf native D.J. Carton poured in a career-high 31 points, his second 30+ scoring performance in the past three games. PJ Dozier chipped in 21 points and four other Wolves players finished in double digits. Former University of Iowa standout Jordan Bohannon scored a career-best 14 points in just 18:23 of action.
Josh Christopher paced Rio Grande with 23 points, but it was the duo of Trevor Hudgins and Louis King who fueled the comeback. Hudgins had 18 points with 12 coming in the fourth while King scored 19 points with 15 coming in the final quarter. As a team, Rio Grande Valley shot 57.7% in the fourth and made six three-pointers.
Iowa and Rio Grande Valley will play twice in the NBA G League regular season when the Wolves visit Edinburg, Texas for a pair of games on March 9 & 11.
After a short break, Iowa starts the regular season on Dec. 29 when the Raptors 905 visit Wells Fargo Arena at 7 p.m. CT.
